SMALLMOUTH BASS STOCKING
Smallmouth Stocking
As with largemouth, smallmouth are never stocked to add to an already vigorous population. Stocking is used only to introduce or reintroduce smallmouth to a body of water. A recent example in a riverain situation illustrates the difficulties in stocking.
A section of the Cannon River had lost its population of smallmouth bass. Fingerlings from a lake dwelling smallmouth bass population were stocked in this river section but were never found again. The following year fingerlings from a nearby river were stocked into this same river section. Today, anglers are catching many nice smallmouth bass in this river section.

SUMMER CRAPPIE
Summer Crappie
Finally summer has arrived. No more 'blue northers', no more barometric changes, no more mild-pleasant weather.....yes sir, 100 degrees in the shade. I know, unless you're from Texas, you think I'm nuts to anticipate the hotter weather, but with it comes some of the best crappie fishing of the year (but not "the" best...that's later). The crappie have completed all their love making and they're hungry and looking for a place to spend the summer's hotter water temps. After the spawn is complete, the crappie will start to migrate to the mid-depths (as dictated by your lake's depth) and look for standing timber, stump rows, brushpiles, creek channel drop-offs and the like. Once found, they are the most predictable that they will be all year long. If you found them 'there' today, they'll probably for sure be 'there' tomorrow. This is the time of year that you get to rid yourself of all those 'old' jigs that have been laying in your tackle box for so long....cause the brushpiles will surely give you good reason to visit your local tackle store as soon as you get home. My favorite way to fish the summer patterns, is to fish my jig vertically over the brushpiles, or vertically along side the standing timber. I'll use either 1/16 oz or 1/8 oz jig heads, depending on what the crappie tell me they want. My jig bodies will vary in size this time of the year from the 1 1/2" size to 4" size...again, dictated by what the crappie tell me. The key to fishing in the summer is S--L--O--W. When you think you're fishing slow enough...slow down some more. Less movement is best, and then when you do move it, just twitch it downward, not upward (too long to explain...just trust me). Two things that you must consider as "gotta do's"...you gotta use hi-viz line, and you gotta watch it all the time your jig is in the water. Why, because sometimes the crappie will knock your socks off when they hit it, but most times they'll just take the jig in and unweight your line (your line will go slack). If you can't see your line, or worse yet, if you're not watching, you'll never know that you missed catching the lake record. And while we're talking line, don't cheat yourself. I have known guys that hardly ever change line, saying that it cost too much, or guys that buy the cheapest line that they can find to save $.50. Think about it this way...what is the only thing that separates you from your fish??? I've figured it out, and it costs me approximately $.35 each to put new line on my reels, and I change every third day of fishing. But I digress. Bottomline, summer time is the easiest time of the year to figure out where the crappie are, as well as to catch them.
Texas Rig Worm
Step 1. Penetrate the head of your soft plastic lure with your hook tip Step 2. Pull the point of the hook through the bottom of your lure aproximately 1/4 inch below the head
Step 3. Before turning the hook around and re-inserting it into the plastic, visually check to see where the penetration should occur Step 4. After re-inserting the tip of your hook into the lure your finished Texas rig should look something like this
The weight of the bullet sinker you use is determined by the conditions you are fishing - add enough to make your plastic sink slowly To add more noise to your rig (thus attracting more attention from bass) put a bead on your mainline between the sinker and the hook
Gizzard Shad
American gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum is a fish of the herring family Clupeidae native to fresh and salt waters of eastern North America.
Like other gizzard shads, the body is deep somewhat forward of the middle. It is a grayish or silvery blue above, becoming silver on the sides and white below. The dorsal fin has 10-12 rays; in adults, the last ray is very long, extending beyond the rest of the fin. The caudal fin is deeply forked. They can reach a length of 57 cm, and weigh up to nearly 2 kg.
American gizzard shad begin life feeding on zooplankton, using their teeth to catch them. At about 1 inch in length, they lose the teeth, become deeper-bodied, develop the muscular gizzard, and become filter feeders, consuming both small invertebrates and phytoplankton, as well as some sand for the gizzard.
They live in a variety of open waters, both clear and silty, including rivers, swamps, lakes, and bays, typically near the surface. They avoid fast-moving water.
Native range extends from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River area west to eastern South Dakota and central New Mexico, as well as to the Gulf of Mexico, where it has been found as far south as Rio Panuco in Mexico.

ALGAE
To all:
In doing some research on the green colored algae that we have had several reports on, I have been informed of the following by our Lake Chemist:
It is called SPIROGYRA and is NOT part of the "blue green" algae family. This is good from an ecology standpoint. Our last year's algae was a red looking, blue green algae which can be troublesome to water quality.
Fortunately the Spirogyra tends to be relatively harmless and should dissipate with warm weather. Do to climate, there seems to be a larger amount in our geographic area than usual. What we are seeing at Weatherby Lake is algae that actually is growing under the water surface. When it is going through photosynthesis the oxygen bubbles cause it to rise to the surface. The algae may change color and have more yellow in it before it is gone.
Hopefully this information is helpful.
Thanks,
Joe Ennett

Glen`s fishing report
Believe the Crappie are coming around the beds. June 12, I went out at 1:45 and got lots of hits on tubes and put 3 very nice ones in the boat. Then I spotted a huge black cloud and lots of surrounding thunderheads and decided it was time to head for home. Alas, I threw back the 3 I had caught (no one wants to clean 3 and I had only been fishing 30 minutes). Well, when I got back to my dock, the black cloud had moved on and clear sky was coming. I went back to the hole and promptly put 7 more very nice ones in the boat. Three of them had slabs over 1/2 in. thick..I was back in my easy chair by 3:30 with the fish in the 'fridge. Not a bad day. glen
